Primo Oval XL shipped

Postby epanfili » Thu Aug 16, 2012 5:10 pm

I purchased a Costco Vision Classic several weeks ago and was immediately captivated by the food that came off the grill. The quality of the grill is quite good and all. However, I discovered that it was a bit small for my needs and the inability to do direct and indirect grilling at the same time was a bit of a challenge. But basically, it was a size issue. So I have broken down and ordered the Oval XL. It should be here in the next week or so. I will write and give my two cent review after a few cooks.

I will be selling my Vision Classic and my Traeger Junior Pellet smoker to help defray the cost of the the new grill. The boss said they must go. Am I allowed to put contact information about that on the forum?

You could keep both Kamados and set one up for direct and the other for indirect. Of course the Weber Kettle would be great for direct and down right cheap by comparison.

I agree on the Traeger any one want to buy one? Funny how I lusted after the Traeger and never knew a Kamado was what I needed.

Primo XL Oval received today

Postby epanfili » Wed Aug 22, 2012 11:43 pm

It came today and arrived in perfect condition. Boy, it is really a lot larger than my Vision Classic. The delivery guy helped me put it in the new table I am building for it. What a blessing that was. I left the top off until after the grill was set in place on its shelf and then added the top framework around it this afternoon. Tomorrow (Thursday) I will lay in the table top and then probably light it off on Friday after the finish has had 24 hours to cure. I can hardly wait.

Primo Oval XL in her new home

Postby epanfili » Sat Aug 25, 2012 11:08 pm

Well, she arrived on Wednesday and has moved into her new home which is nearly completed.

Here's the link to the photo. https://www.box.com/s/124b54d59c42b429fd17

I cooked up some short ribs tonight. It is amazing how steady she held the temp. I set it for 275 degrees and once I had it dialed in, it stayed within 10 degrees for the entire four hour cook.

I bought a Vision Classic first to make sure I liked Kamado cooking. I figured a $600 mistake would be easier to swallow than a $2000 mistake. After several weeks with the Vision, I was convinced that a ceramic grill was for me. The only issue I had with the Vision was that it was a bit small for my cooking needs. I is really great for four to six people. At last count, I think I have fourteen between my kids, their spouses and my grandkids. Plus we sometimes entertain groups nearly as large as the family. It is much easier to cook for a group on the Primo. I am very pleased with it

As far as the table these two links may be useful or perhaps not. They bring up things I never thought of as far as a home built table.

Thanks, Marty. I will keep a close watch to make sure I don't run into similar problems. I ran my hand under the bottom of the Primo to feel for heat on the tile. I was actually surprised by the fact that they were just barely warm. The ceramic feet under the cooker gives me about an inch of clearance between the bottom of the grill and the tile.

Going on year two with my XL and still love it. So much space and steady temps. Just wait until you are doing a low and slow in the winter without worrying about dropping temps. I'm very glad I made the plunge.
