Big Steel Keg various models

Postby Marty » Wed Aug 08, 2012 11:53 am

On amazon they have
Broil King 2000 Big Steel Keg----$700
Broil King Big Steel Keg 4000----$849
Broil King 05503 big Steel Keg---$800

Is there any real difference between these? Over on the Amazing Ribs site they say there were too many versions to keep straight.

The Broil King 2000 is the same as the standard one but there are no side shelves, cast iron grate, or additional top grate.

I cannot believe they are trying to charge that much when a CGK is only $300.00 and many ceramic models can be had for that price

It's very durable and can be mounted on a trailer receiver and taken anywhere. Even if you could put the CGK on a trailer receiver I'm not sure it would hold up very long to some bumpy roads. Maybe it would..... It does seem a little expensive for my taste.

I don't doubt the durability, and am not questioning quality, I originally was looking at the bsk when I wanted a kamado, but I cannot believe it is priced in the ceramic range. It should cost more than a CGK but not over double.

Ahh Big Steel Keg or ceramic? Ceramic can crack or shatter if knocked over and if the finish is compromised the steel can rust.

Theoretically a creamily would never rust and could last 100 years.

The steel can be painted and maintained.

The question is how long will the finish reasonably last on the BSK and the CGK for that matter. At this point the finish on my AKORN is like new.

I love my Keg it is very well made, definately a more finished product than the Akorn. For the price the Akorn is a steal, which is why I purchased one instead of another keg. I do think the keg should be in the $400-600 range. The BSK4000 is the Broil King Keg, side shelves, cast iron grate, upper grate and wheels. The 2000 doesn't have the additional grate, wheels or cast iron although I thought you could buy the parts to make it a BKK. Not sure what the 5503

I do think with out any direct experience that the Keg is a more finished product. There are just more possible leaks with the akorn. I really do want a Keg.

I think both are great, the Keg is definately better built but the Akorn is a better value.

On the Keg I like the thicker cast iron, side shelves and upper grate, it also seems to be a bit better insulated as the outside barely gets warm when the inside is at 600 degrees.

The Akorn has a larger grilling area, I like the wheels better and believe it or not I like the removable center of the grate (although I've never had to use it yet). Most of all the price!

Both are great cookers, you can't really go wrong with either. I'm lucky to have both, I can set one for high temperatures for searing then have the other for low and slow. Plus I can probably cook 10 or more butts if I ever needed too. I'd actually like another keg or Akorn for contests.
