Probe holes for mav. 732

Postby Danquixote » Wed Aug 08, 2012 9:00 pm

I have read many posts about mods necessary for complete satisfaction while using the Akorn. I may have overlooked this one, if so please forgive this newbys oversight. I will be purchasing the Mav. 732 digital thermometer as recomended by many users. I read information that cautioned against crimping the wires connecting the probes to the transmitter. Maverick offers high temp silicone gaskets that may be inserted into drilled holes on the cooker. My question is.....drilling ceramic is not the easiest task and would likely damage the cooker top if incorrectly done. Has anyone attempted this mod on any ceramic dome? Is it really necessary to do so to provide protection against crimping, or does the sealing gasket allow some give when latching the cover to allow for this........Input and solutions or comments are appreciated......Dan

Most folks just set the unit on one of the shelves with one probe wires positioned in the meat and on the grate. The lid closes fine, the probe wires aren't crimped, and all will be well. No drilling necessary.

yep me too. however, if you are dead set on drilling, just get a set of diamond tile bits from lowes. the heads of them look like a small spade shovel and do an excellent job of cutting ceramic/glass. the key with these bits is to drill slow and not build up heat. they cut through ceramics very well
