Killer deal on Mesquite lump at Costco Business

Postby BohicaSD » Sat Aug 04, 2012 6:51 pm

I just picked up a 40lb bag of Mexican mesquite charcoal from Costco Business Center here in San Diego. $11.79! Item 156132. I haven't cooked with it yet, but did move it to a tub. It is really large (but not too large) pieces with very little fines. I'll follow up after my first burn.

If you don't have a Costco Business Center in your city or town, they may deliver. Just go to the Costco Business Center website. It would be cheaper to have it delivered to a business website

Alternatively, (I found this on another forum), consider going to a large Mexican Supermarket. The ones we have here are Pancho Villa and Northgate. Both are fantastic places to get produce and meats and the post I read said that they also had 40lb bags of mesquite. Another source would probably restaurant supply stores like Restaurant Depot.

Here's a link to the Costco charcoal. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.as ... pnav=bdoff

The Costco site says it is Lazzari lump. That is an amazing price. I pay $10 for 20 lbs at Orchard Supply Hardware.

When I sear steaks, I use a lot of Lazzari, but when I go low and slow, I only add a handful of pieces. The mesquite flavor is strong and I find it overpowers some meats. I like to mix it with Royal Oak.

In my experience, mesquite lump sparks more than other lump. Be prepared for that.

Lazzari burns so hot it pops during regular grilling.
In SF bay area where Lazzari is located the 40 Ibs bags are also at the Danville Rotten Robbies gas station. After moving to S. Cal. it's harder to get. Found some at BevMo for $21. My local Costco Business Center doesn't carry any lump charcoal. -:{

The Chinese and Viet. supermarkets are good to get a wide variety of meats, especially pork and sea food for a great price to quality. Whole Foods will do special cuts (flat iron) if asked. WF is one of the few Western supermarket that still does butchering from the side. Most are just cutting cyro-packs and repacking. Costco Business center also has beef whole clogs for $1.77 per Ibs and Foster Farm chicken. Slatter Brother's meats are well trimmed, not water loaded and sale items are price to move.

I hate how many of the major chains are water loading their beef and hiding the fat. That's why I buy from the above. I wish Costco would dry age instead of wet age the beef.

I have used Lazzari regularly since I bought my kamado. All mesquite charcoal has some sparking and popping during the first 5 minutes of starting, after that there is no popping. Lazzari burns hot, but that has nothing to do with the popping. The mesquite tree grows in desert-like terrain, the wood is a little more porous than oak. If started correctly the popping is minimal and only lasts few short minutes. A hot burning wood is a big advantage in a ceramic kamado. You can still keep the temp down to 220 degrees or less if you restrict the air, and you can crank it up to over 1000 in nothing flat. Some people think misquite lump leaves an overpowering smoke taste on their food. I have not found this to be the case, even with chicken and fish. That is a terrific deal and if I had a Costco business store near me I'd grab that in a minute.

BohicaSD - hello from a SD neighbor...

Mesquite lump charcoal is my favorite and "go-to" charcoal.

I wonder if they have the same deal in the other Costco stores (the one close to me, on Carmel Mountain
Rd., did not have it last time I checked).

Skinnerron, this is not available from the local Costco stores. Only from the Business Center store in Kearny Mesa.

BohicaSD, Also a SD neighbor. Thanks for the heads up. Just ordered 2 bags online.

Had to go to SFO to pick up my mom. Good excuse to visit Lazzari, which is nearby. A 40 lb bag of mesquite retails for $13.62, so the Costco price is even better than at the wholesale site. I was able to buy 40 lb of oak, which will be fun to try. It is $16.09 a bag.

Yep! Found this stuff at a restaurant supply store for $14. Huge tree trunk-sized pieces so you have to bust it up with a hammer... actually a good thing because you can break it down to the exact size chunks you want. And its super cheap!
